NCAA clears ISU's Hill for next season
NORMAL -- Bobby Hill has cleared one hurdle in getting back on the court for Illinois State’s basketball team. The NCAA informed ISU on Thursday that Hill has been reinstated to play without penalties after an investigation into his living arrangements while he attended Vashon High School in St. Louis. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported in February that Hill and his older brother, Johnny, were put in a St. Louis apartment by Floyd Irons, their coach at Vashon. Johnny Hill, who plays at Southeast Missouri State, also was not penalized by the NCAA. Bobby Hill, a 6-foot-7 junior forward, played his freshman year at ISU before transferring to Lincoln College last season to strengthen his academic status. Hill earned junior college first-team All-American honors while averaging 16.7 points per game. “We certainly were pleased with the information that was provided by the NCAA,” said ISU athletic director Sheahon Zenger in a statement. “This decision is in keeping with the ‘student-first’ philosophy that was adopted by the NCAA Management Council several years ago.” The next hurdle for Hill is recovering from surgery last month to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He suffered the injury during a pick-up game. “I want to thank Dr. Zenger and everyone (at ISU) for their time and effort in trying to help,” said Hill. “It clears up a lot of things. I can concentrate on my classes over the summer.” ISU coach Tim Jankovich, who is in Las Vegas attending an AAU tournament, said Hill “was thrilled beyond belief” by the news from the NCAA. Hill, who started eight games at ISU in the 2006-07 season, will be counted on heavily by the Redbirds in the upcoming season. Hill can play either the small forward or power forward positions. “He’s working very hard every day in his rehab program,” said Jankovich. “We’re hopeful for a speedy return, but in these situations a speedy return can mean five or six months. You never know. Part of it will be hard work and part is luck of the draw.” Jankovich might be surprised to see what Hill is doing when he returns to campus. “I started jogging yesterday,” said Hill. “Today, I shot some free throws. I’m moving on it and stuff.” Last month, the Missouri State High School Activities Association stripped Vashon of three state championships for using ineligible players from 2001 to 2006. Irons was sentenced to a year in prison last September after pleading guilty to federal charges of mail and wire fraud in a real estate scheme. He began serving his sentence in March. Part of Irons’ plea agreement required him to tell the MSHSAA of eligibility and recruiting violations that occurred at Vashon. Irons led Vashon to 10 state titles in 33 years as coach. |
