Boost U.S. infrastructure, provide good-paying jobs

There's a saying that goes: The more things change, the more they stay the same. It's true. The struggles of a century ago are alive, here and now.

The robber barons built their industrial empires on high finance and the backs of cheap labor. Their battle cry was ``tax cuts and deregulation.'' But on the way to the bank, the industrialists ran into an immovable force -the American labor movement.

The elimination of child labor, the 8-hour work day and safer work places are just a few of the achievements unions have won for all working people in this country. Unions created the middle class.

Today, having put our industrial base on a fast boat to China and our financial house in a mortgage crisis, the global economists are still calling for ``tax cuts and deregulation'' to fix our problems.

They were wrong then and they're wrong now. The answer is to re-invest in America: our infrastructure, our people, our future.

The Laborers' International Union of North America has launched a campaign to ``Build America So America Works'' - an intensive and sustained effort to redirect our nation's resources to taking care of America's basics: its roadways, bridges, dams, railways, schoolhouses and other fundamentals the country depends on every day, but which have fallen into decay, lowering quality of life and weakening our economy.

Building America will not only heal our country's infrastructure, it will also help create a healthy and sustainable economy through the creation of millions of good, family-supporting jobs.

Building America will fuel this country's greatest economic engine - its work force. Building America will rebuild the middle class.

As you celebrate this Labor Day weekend, I invite you to join with LIUNA's 58,000 members in the Midwest Region in ``Building America so America Works.''

John F. Penn

Bloomington

The writer is LIUNA vice president and Midwest regional manager.

" If it were as simple as "Boost U.S. infrastructure, provide good-paying jobs", who would be opposed? The problem is that everyone wants what is best for themselves. That goes for the CEO, the union member, and the unemployed welfare recipient. Why is greed acceptable for you, and not for anyone else. We all want to make more money and spend less, but you can't have it both ways. The problem is, that people rationalize their greed; "I only want what's right/My piece of the pie/ They're making all this money off me, etc..." It's still greed, because you want more at someone elses expense. What's best for you is not necessarily best for me and my family. "

" Our country thrived at one time, then high tax, high payrolls, high costing benefit packages, high insurance rates, and the thousands and thousands of dollars it takes to run a business, plant or factory, each day, has ran them out of the country. When they left here, they left people jobless, when they leave where they are now, they will leave people jobless. Repairing aging roads, schoolhouses, dams, bridges and so forth is not going to do anything for our country. It will only keep those in a job that are doing the repairing. That will not boost our economy. We need to bring back the industry that left the country in the first place. Offer them packages that will work and quit piling incentive programs that sound good but don't work. It wasn't the pay scale that took the industry to other countries, it was the incentive packages that our government came up with, and the high cost to keep them running. "

" Years ago unions were good for the American worker and good for America, however the good old boy politics within the union ruined what was once good. Repeal NAFTA and bring back the jobs we lost to cheap over seas labor. That's when the unions were stronger Mr. Penn, did you forget? Also you might help your cause by dropping your endorsement of that crook Blagovitch. "

" Well John we saw your union and build America in action recently at one of our local churches. Your union members picketed free American citizens donating thier time to build America for free and closed the job down. Your union strong armed free interprise and forced the concrete company to refuse to deliver concrete to the american citizens that donated thier free time to aid thier fellow free americans. We have seen your brand of union greed building america first hand and it stinks of political greed and personal agenda. So John your union is as much a problem in America as the greedy corporations. "

" Well then we need education if we do not have qualified workers. I don't believe that to begin with. Surely a lot of our children have been applying themselves. If not we need a good leader who wants to lead the way to personal responsibililty which will lead to less young men being locked up instead of working. We do have to start at the ground up. McCain is not sending the message that he wants to improve family lives and children lives and make people more accountable. All he wants to talk about is Iraq and Viet Nam. That makes the choice very clear unless we want to continue down the path we are headed. Eight is enough! "

" I would like to ask Mr. Penn how this country can possibly afford everything he and the unions and Barack Obama want in the next few years. Exactly how much will socialized healthcare, socialized education, and huge new infrastructure projects across the country cost? The non-partisan folks who crunch the numbers claim that Obama will have to raise taxes a lot more than he indicated so far to even have a chance at pulling this off. How will Americans (even union members) feel about working until Thanksgiving every year to pay off their taxes? "

" I could go for what has been said but, when I drive down the road and see make tax dollars leaning on a union supported shovel I have a big problem with anything that the union fat cats come up with. Mr. Penn if you would make your union boy work for the money they suck from the government I will stand behind everything you say till then just keep on dreaming. "

" We don't ahve enough qualified people to do the kind of work that needs to be done. To build infrastructure, we need engineers, craftmen, etc, and these guys and gals are working and earning good wages.

To get down and rebuild the countries infrastructure, we need a good hard depression, to throw the people with the right skill mixes out of work and get them desparate enough to do a government job. And we need the right regulatory environment and judicial environment, so instead of hearing "Not in My back yard", we hear "You can build it here." "

" Yeah, Buckeye is on top of it.
Lets have "Right to work, for less" laws, and bring back slave labor. That will boost the economy. Those workers will really work hard to make republicans richer. They'll do excellent work too. Look at China! "

Do not expect Mr. Penn or his minions to be bothered with your [completely justified] concerns. For them, it's a money chase, pure and simple. "

" buckeye, before we do what you advocate, we need to secure our southern border and pass an employ only legals law with teeth. If we do as you suggest without what I suggest, industrialists will import workers for cheaper labor costs. "

These prevaling wages laws make all projects cost more , tie up our courts , and slow down repairs . That change and a right to work law would go a long way to putting folks back to work . Being required to hand over your hard earned money to a union offical to keep a job is just unamerican. The unions complain about lobbyests and special intrest controlling our government yet they are the lobbyests and labor is a special intrest that is always asking for favors in exchange for cash. Get the unions out of politics and america will be strong. "
