100 years ago
Aug. 31, 1908: The Heyworth Horse Fair will be held September 17. The committees are at work on preparation and will have a pamphlet ready to distribute in a few days. The music committee is corresponding with some good bands and will choose one to play that day.
75 years ago
Aug. 31, 1933: An explosion and fire tore through the sign shop above the United Cigar Store, 202 North Center. Proprietor Gordon Ingersoll, 27, was hurled through a second story window and seriously hurt. His injuries may be life-threatening.
50 years ago
Aug. 31, 1958: Ken Cotton, 15, 603 East Oakland, just got his auctioneer’s diploma. He weighs 112 pounds and stands five feet tall, feeding speculation he may be the world’s smallest auctioneer. He plans to work this fall with auctioneers Harold Kindred and Ralph Zabel.
25 years ago
Aug. 31, 1983: The JMK Tire Company of Champaign will open a store in Bloomington at Veterans Parkway and Mercer Avenue. The store will offer major band name tires. Jim French, of the Champaign store, will manage the firm’s expansion.
