Union disputes number of DCFS layoffs

SPRINGFIELD — The Department of Children and Family Services is preparing for layoffs as the state agency and several others look to deal with budget cuts.

But how many employees will lose their jobs at the agency is in dispute.

Union officials says they’ve been advised to prepare for more than 300 layoffs from the department.

But agency spokesman Kendall Marlowe says the agency will pink-slip only 179 employees. The rest are expected to transfer to other jobs and other departments.

Union officials say they know nothing about fewer positions being pared or the possibility of job transfers.

Other state agencies like the State Treasurer have gone through layoffs.

Illinois is seeking to close a $2 billion deficit. Thirteen state historic sites and eleven parks are slated to close.

" This is good Republican politics...cut the big government programs. If you want a park, pay for it locally. Get rid of the big socialistic programs like DCFS. This is a Republican platform we can support! "

" I am tired of right wingers thinking that money buys happiness. I know a lot of so called financially challenged families whose children are wayyyy happier than the my mom and dad works all day to buy me every toy in the store just so they don't have to deal with me kid! These people pay taxes just like everybody else but because their job isn't on the fortune 500 list you are saying they have no right to get married and have children. Get a life! That's why your kids grow up and shoot up their school with all the cool things you bought them from your fortune 500 job that you love more than them. "

" Just a Thought, riddle me this. Why should people have children when they are financially challanged as you put it, to begin with? Families among civilized people should predominantly be the working class people who pay the taxes and medical insurance premiums, to bring children into the world. Liberals argue that everyone can make a mistake, and that I agree on. However when the same people keep having children with no visible means of support,. If you are going to continue having children, pay for them. If you can not afford them, buy condoms. DCFS has stuck their nose into peoples' lives for too long. I am glad they are cutting back on staff, they were unreliable anyway. "

" Ever wonder why we have a huge deficit? Thank our governor that flies to Springfield (when he decides to be there) at the taxpayers expense. Why does he not live in the capitol you ask? Well Mrs. Rod didn't want to move from shy town for one... Boo Hoo
And he has the GALL to claim he is a good governor????? "

" they can close that whole pragram, would keep a lot more financially "challenged" families together.LifeisLife is correct, if you have the cash, your odds are a heck of a lot better keeping your family together, if not , be prepared to jump through every hoop they desire, till you can jump no more. "

" With the way most of the government employees handle their jobs you probably won't notice much difference. Calling and getting someone to answer or actually do something anymore is just about impossible. State/city jobs have to have the most lazy people on earth. Good ol' boy system at it's best. "

" DCFS isn't bad. The problem is their is not enough money given to them so that they can do their job properly. Their are too few social workers to investigate all the cases they get in a timely and full manner. They are underpaid already and overworked. I just feel sorry for all the children who are truely being abused and will no longer get the help because their are not enough social workers. This is the governor's worst cut. If anything it should be our highest priority, and we should be pouring our tax dollars into DCFS so that people like yakky_one will have their faith restored in our system, and children that are being abused can have social workers with the highest education, and pay, taking care of them. "

" My husband is a county road employee, he and I both worry about his job. Are we not paying the same amount of taxes if not more in the past few years? Then why the need to cut some jobs? Why don't the elected cut back on some of their perks and waste? Since prices are higher I'm sure they are spending more on their state furnished luxuries. Why must the lower paid employee always lose out and the hardship be put on them? It seems the elected never give up anything during hard times, they are always forceing the poor to do so. I know millions could be saved from elected waste and that is where the savings should be made first. "

" You are correct indeed yakky_one those people are backwards as hell! I have seen them take kids from homes that are really trying (not a lot of money but a lot of love) but call them on the right person (whole lot of money but no love and attention) and the investigation comes up inconclusive. "

" DCFS does have a bad rep. And they do have some employees who need their priorities straightened out. But I have a good friend who is a foster mom; these are the programs that make DCFS worthwhile. "

" I don't give a squat about DCFS. I have heard so many bad things about that agency...someone correct me if I am wrong, please? "

" OK so now you know!!!! Why would the agency spokesman give false information to the media? The media never tells us how many employees the agency has in the state. The union acts like they are being left out of the loop. The agency has reported that the vast majority of those effected are non case employees. S ohow does this adversly effect the agency. The case workers will have to answer thier own phones? DCFS has been glutted with do nothing employees for years. This one is a blessing in disguise. "
