Note similar war views in 1863 and 2008
Advertisement

I take pen in hand as a historian - retired from the classroom in 1985.

In my professional career and experiences, it has been most interesting to observe political events from the 1930s to now.

My attention, per the vice presidential nomination of Sen. Joseph Biden, is drawn to Ohio Congressman Clement Vallandigham and his ``divergent view'' of the Civil War in 1863.

Thus, the question is significant: Is Sen. Biden's divergent view about the Iraq War in 2008 very similar? It seems logical to ask.

That clearly excludes you from the pool of historians, earthling. You are about as doctrinaire as they come. "

" Archie -

Here's a clue: Why don't you read a little about Vallandigham and then draw your own conclusion about whether there is a parallel between him and Biden. It beats whining and will actually prompt you to a bit of research, which, I suspect, was the motivation for the original letter. Some things are better taught by asking questions in an effort to prompt a listener to gain insight on the subject at hand. That is sometimes called the 'Socratic method'. I commend it to you. "

Your, Republicans are always correct and Democrats are always evil, bias also raises the question of your credibility to even pretend to be a "historian". Along time ago you taught your version of high school history. Leave it at that "Professor". "

" Peanut--

It is not the students' fault if the professor speaks in riddles that nobody understands. It is the job of the educator to take less than stellar students and elevate their understanding. That's why we call them "teachers". Unfortunately, the ability to teach is a gift and the demand far outstrips the supply, as clearly indicated by Prof. Fairfield's tome. "

It is hardly the professor's fault that his students are less than stellar. "

" Why not lock Biden up until he talks? And talks, and talks, and talks... to tell on himself? Sooner or later he's bound to say something that will incriminate himself... although he'd bore his interrogrators to death? "

" Don't know about that divergent view, but there are similarities. For instance, Joe Biden has been know to shoot himself in the foot, on fairly regular occasions. "

" Professor Fairfield poses a question. Which is a riddle. Wrapped up in a mystery. Inside an enigma. Apparently, the good congressman in question once mentioned that he didn't want to belong to the U.S. O.K., so I cheated: I looked it up. Had I been asked this on one of Professor Fairfield's exams I'd have flunked. And, no doubt, heard a shout from the front of the classroom: " Ah yes, Crybaby gets an F, class. See Crybaby slink down in his chair, class. Slink, Crybaby. Slink. " Anyway, I don't know what this has to do with Sen. Biden. Maybe Sen. Biden also doesn't want to be part of the U.S. Hey, maybe this means that Joe Biden is a traitor, a Presbyterian, or secretly from Ohio. Or gets his nails done at some stinkin' Lib Beauty shop. I don't know. But, since it seems illogical to ask, I'm askin'. "

Do you regard Vallandigham with sympathy or criticism? "

" Joe "Copperhead" Biden? It has a jaunty, renegade ring to it, eh? And if Senator Obama should become President Obama, perhaps he should reside at Beauvoir in Biloxi. There seems to be at rend among Illinois Dems who are elected as an Executive officer: refuse the Executive Mansion, The historical analogy would be delicious. From an old acquaintance of yours. "

Archie Goodwin wrote on Aug 30, 2008 6:58 AM:

" Don't worry, Ktlin...Biden doesn't know, either. And Professor Fairfield, if this letter is an example of your classroom work, I am glad you retired. It would appear your former students still don't understand what you are saying. "

ktlin wrote on Aug 30, 2008 5:18 AM:

" Was it pro or con? I don't think there was enough info provided to answer the question or maybe even know what the question really is? We do know that Biden's view is divergent from someone's but then again we don't know whose. "
