U.S. headed for unneeded confrontation with Russia
It looks like President Bush is determined to get us into yet another conflict before leaving. Not being reported is the avoidable upcoming confrontation in Georgia between American warships delivering aid and the Russian Fleet on the Black Sea. The American warships are headed for the Russian-controlled Port of Poti, instead of previously used Batumi. This may lead to an unnecessary confrontation. The cause in Georgia is now irreversible. By claiming the right of self determination for South Ossetia and Abkhazia, as we did with Kosovo, Russia became the hero of the region. This is their backyard. They have watched Bush encircle them and their allies with military bases, missiles, and NATO memberships, and now Russia is fighting back. We have more to lose than Russia. Russia has suspended NATO cooperation. This hurts the cause in Afghanistan because of lost supply routes. As far as the G-8 goes, Russia says they can do fine without it. Russia is flush with cash now, due to Bush's wars driving up oil prices. What we don't want is for the Russians to supply sophisticated weapons to our enemies, as we did when they were in Afghanistan. This could happen if it is isolated. Will Congress allow our lame-duck president to start yet another unwinnable war while they whoop it up in Denver? Before someone claims victory in Iraq, let me say that the Iraqis are banking their oil money in European banks while America borrows money to pay the Iraqis' bills. They have a timetable to kick us out completely in two years, and Iraq is negotiating oil contracts with China. Define victory? Gilbert Reed Normal |
