Brucker powers U High past Eureka 27-8
EUREKA -- Even though the shutout was lost in the fourth quarter, University High’s first win of the season -- and first for first-year coach Dusty Burk -- was not. | Box scores, schedules, stats The Pioneers scored the game’s first 27 points en route to a 27-8 Corn Belt Conference win Friday night at McCollum Field. U High was bolstered by a big defensive stand in the red zone to conclude the first half. “It was very key. Our defense always stepped up,” said Burk. “You cannot say enough about them.” Eureka converted a fourth down and had the ball on the U High 6-yard line late in the first half. But the defense held its ground, causing a pair of negative running plays to halt the drive and maintain a 20-0 lead. “If we could have got some points, it might have been different,” Eureka coach Kurt Barth said. “Our kids did a good job of getting drives going. We just could not sustain it.” If that was not enough, so was trying to contain Will Brucker. Playing his first game at running back in three years, Brucker galloped for 164 yards and three touchdowns. “We knew he had a lot of speed,” Barth said. “He’s one of those kids who you cannot let get outside.” According to Burk, the hosts frequently blitzing paved the way for Brucker. “As much as they were blitzing, all he needed a little bit of daylight,” Burk said. “It was fun to watch.” Already up 7-0, Brucker broke free for an 83-yard touchdown run to put the Pioneers up 14-0. On the next series, U High’s Pat Kelso intercepted Sam Durley at the 35. The Pioneers needed five plays, but turned the miscue into points on a 3-yard pass from Jake Todino to Vince Chiodo, which was tipped but fell to the senior’s waiting arms. Eureka ended the shutout when Durley found Andrew Hoerr for a 24-yard touchdown, which was set up by a pass interference call against U High on a 4-and-14 play. Durley, who threw for nearly 1,400 yards last season, finished with 138 yards, but was just 15 of 39 along with two interceptions. |
