Former Pontiac mayor working to keep prison from closing

PONTIAC -- Central Illinois lawmakers continue to do everything in their power to keep Pontiac Correctional Center open.

Mike Ingles, former Pontiac mayor and former president of the Illinois Municipal League, is using his connections to influence other mayors and other leaders to tell Gov. Blagojevich why the prison should stay open.

“I know of no one in Central Illinois that has a better statewide network than Mike Ingles,” said state Sen. Dan Rutherford, a Chenoa Republican.

Ingles first will contact mayors in communities near prisons, since those sites would be overcrowded if Pontiac closed.

“Some of the mayors that have correction centers in their community I know, some I don’t, but we are certainly going to contact them,” Ingles said. “Right now, the governor is going to make the decision, and he’s going to make it in the confines of the budget process.

“We are asking the mayors to contact the governor about the impact this would have in their community and make the case to budget the money to leave Pontiac Correctional Center open,” he said. “We are all in this together.”

Ingles was mayor of Pontiac for 16 years, on the City Council for 10 years and with the Illinois Municipal League for 11 years.

A recent public hearing on the prison closure is available for viewing via a link on Rutherford’s Web site, www.danrutherford.com.

" Correction. Bishop Hill isn't north of I-80. It is, however, within 20 miles of it. "

" To kwanack. You said, "...where the parks aren't effected, say, north of I-80."

More misinformation. Here are a list of historic sites and parks north of I-80 to be closed due to budget issues:

Apple River Fort, in Elizabeth
Bishop Hill, Henry County
Hauberg Indian Museum at Blackhawk State Historic Site in Rock Island
Castle Rock State Park, in Oregon, Illinois

If you want to include those sites within 10 miles of I-80, that will double your number. "

" To 360stand. You said, "...don't forget the recall pushed by Dan Rutherford. "

One of many pieces of misinformation out there. Danny Boy did not "push" the recall amendment. He voted for it, but he wasn't the sponser, or even a co-sponser. THAT would be pushing it! BTW, many Democrats ALSO voted for the recall amendment.

Quit trying to paint Rutherford as some sort of savior of Livingston County. He's only trying to protect his own campaign contributions. He cares nothing about the people themselves. "

" To those of you who believe that closing the prison will mean that the parks can stay open, why don't you transfer, or find a different job where the parks aren't effected, say, north of I-80. Or do you think that it's not that easy and may, in fact, have an impact on your family for generations to come. If you look at this in a larger picture, you may see that the prision closing will have a ripple effect on the entire community to the point that getting to the park won't be as easy as it once was. It really isn't an either/or answer. "

" c_it_4_what_it_is, are you for real? I think you're gonna notice when 54 million dollars leaves central IL and goes over to Iowa...I think a lot of people who think it won't make a difference will start to notice.

I truly know what is wrong with IL, this country, and this world...if something doesn't directly hit people square between the eyes then they just don't care. "

" Perhaps sometimes we need to be brought back to reality a bit. For all of those who want Pontiac closed: Stateville needs 31 million to keep it running. Inmates are found wondering in the tunnels and the F-House is a security nightmare. Pontiac needs 3.6 million to fix the boiler system. The actual cellhouses are structurally sound. Not to mention the quality of work due to the quality of staff at Pontiac, which there is no comparison. Livingston County is Republican, Will County is Democratic, and don't forget the recall pushed by Dan Rutherford. Wake up. To continually reitterate to those who are functioning with a lack of intelligence, well, it's like repeating yourself to unaccepting inmates. Pontiac will remain open. Cogfa will recommend so. Don't forget the lawsuits, capital plan, fall veto session, and moratorium possibility. Sorry, PCC isn't going anywhere, "

" With the dead line coming up in less than 4 weeks, he Ingles hasn't done this yet? Maybe his procrastination is why Pontiac decided we didn't want to pay him $70,000 a year to be our mayor? I mean he already draws a large retirement for being a teach and works at Catapillar. "

" I agree with the "close the prison, save the parks" comment. More people will be effected by the closing of parks than by the closing of Pontiac Prison. The prison workers can transfer or find different jobs, but the effects of losing parks will effect generations to come. "
