Normal mayor could receive $8,000 raise

NORMAL -- The mayor of Normal could get an $8,000 pay increase, effective May 1.

The City Council Tuesday will consider increasing the mayor’s salary from the current $10,000 a year to $18,000.

The council also will consider a nearly $1.3 million bid by Rowe Construction Co. for this year’s street resurfacing projects and hear about the town’s “healthy” financial condition in a report by Finance Director Ron Hill.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Normal City Hall, 100 E. Phoenix Ave. The council will have a work session on a proposed community sustainability plan at 5:30 p.m.

The mayor’s current annual salary was set in 2000 with an increase from $7,200.

City Council members received a salary increase in 2003 for three seats and 2005 for the remaining three seats.

They are paid $4,800 a year, but they rejected a raise to $6,000 in January.

The Local Government Officer Compensation Act requires a change in salary be made 180 days before the beginning of a new term.

If the proposed raise is approved, it would go into effect May 1 -- after the election for city officials in the spring.

Current Mayor Chris Koos has announced he will seek re-election. So far, no other candidates have come forth for the position.

Bloomington Mayor Steve Stockton is paid $12,000 a year.

The Bloomington City Council recently discussed increasing the salary but, without making a formal decision, agreed to take up the issue in summer 2010.

Meanwhile, the cost of liquid asphalt used in resurfacing streets has increased 72 percent since May, causing the sole bid for the town’s annual resurfacing project to come in 16.2 percent over the engineer’s estimate and 40 percent over the amount budgeted for the project.

Because the bid was so high, Town Engineer Gene Brown is recommending three streets be deleted from this year’s list, reducing the cost by about $332,635.

Streets that would be resurfaced this year are: Adelaide Street from Wilmette Drive to Striegal Court; Fell Avenue from Archie Avenue to Virginia Avenue; Gregory Street in the Main Street and University High School area; Linden Street from the corporate limits north to Virginia; and Vernon Avenue from Grandview Drive to Linden Street.

Deleted projects would be Fell from Cherry Street to Willow Street; Vernon Avenue from Baugh Drive to Blair Drive; and Linden from the Constitution Trail Bridge to Virginia.

" He deserves it! He is an "executive" with the experience to be Vice President! We should be happy to pay so little for all his executive experience and be happy he decideds not to run for POTUS. "

" I call corruption as this state is closing services, everyone in government is getting raises, how nice of them all....
All the governing bodies of this nation have turned corrupt and this is a perfect example of why our nation is struggling...... "

" Well, Tucker, I'm sure your boss would be happy to give you an $8000 pay raise as long as you make $18,000 a year. As for the ones in Bloomington they can't bring in the money to give anyone a raise. Bloomington is in the red and that's why they don't get raises. Maybe they need to take a page from the book of Normal and then they could DESERVE a raise. "

" To mnafziger and JMK,
That is not the Town of Normal’s intersection to maintain. Please feel free to contact IDOT with your complaint. As has been mentioned numerous times (especially in reference to the Raab intersection and closing of Soooo Convenient) Main Street is owned and maintained (such as it is) by the State of Illinois, State Rt. 51. Call Rod with your complaint. Yes the intersection is bad!!! "

" mnafziger is definitely right - College and Main is one of the worst intersections in town... and one of the more visible (or should I say jarring) to those who visit the community. It should be at the top of the priority list. "

" Are they going to raise everyone elses wages, that works for this city? I mean, if they are going to raise one person, who does so little, for the city, why not everyones wages? What's a mayor's job anyway, deligate work to others. "

" NO! NO! NO! Koos does not deserve more money. Normal needs the money for the water feature. Outstanding job? Sarcasm, right? New council, new mayor! City goverment overhaul. "

" The intersection of college and main is actually a state controlled intersection and is up to them to be fixed not the town "

" I don't have a problem with the raise for the Mayor. He works very hard, spends monumental time at the job and he deserves the additional salary. I do, however have a problem with the budgeting of road work in the city. Let's face it, anything petroelum related is going to be expensive, and asphalt is a petroleum deritive. I also have a probelm with the chioce of the streets being resurfaced. I think the intersection of Main St. @ College Ave. is one of the wrost in the city and should be addressed immediately. This intersection is deplorable with the bumpy asphalt
that can put your front end out of alignment on your vehicle. Come on Normal. You can spend millions on a new "Uptown"; how about taking care of the worst intersection in the city. "

" They are not there for the pay or so they should not be, the mayor owns a business and im sure is not hurting for the money. I still want to know why the town of normal pays someone i believe around $80,000 to run the normal theater? That there is a crock of %&^$! "
