Man allegedly trying to collect on debt pleads guilty to home invasion, robbery
BLOOMINGTON -- A 23-year-old Bloomington man could receive up to 14 years in prison when he is sentenced on charges that he broke into a man’s home in November and tried to pour bleach down the victim’s throat. David Koeppen pleaded guilty Thursday to home invasion, residential burglary and robbery. Charges of aggravated battery and aggravated unlawful restraint were dismissed as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.
Koeppen told Judge Charles Reynard that he understood the plea deal and the possible consequences. The agreement calls for a maximum prison term of 14 years behind bars. Police said Keoppen, of the 2700 block of Rocksbury Drive, broke into a 40-year-old man’s rural Bloomington home in an effort to collect a debt. The victim and Koeppen were casual acquaintances, police said. Koeppen threatened to harm the victim if he did not receive $10,000, police said. Koeppen also is accused of tying the man’s hands and hitting him in the head with a hatchet during the attack that ended after he drove the victim to a bank to withdraw cash, police said. When Koeppen left the bank to talk on his cell phone, the victim told the teller about the incident and the teller locked the bank doors, police said. Police said they stopped Koeppen after he used the man’s credit card for a cash advance at a gas station. Koeppen will be eligible for day-for-day credit for good behavior to reduce his sentence, Reynard said. A Nov. 4 sentencing hearing is scheduled. |
