CCHS pulls away from U High in second half
NORMAL -- Central Catholic High School struggled to hold onto the football in the first half Friday, with two of the Saints’ three turnovers leading to touchdowns by rival University High. | Photo gallery In the second half, Central latched onto the pigskin and refused to share, using scoring drives of 10, 12 and nine plays to pull away to a 40-20 victory in the Intercity Doubleheader at Hancock Stadium. Senior quarterback Adam Rebholz threw for four touchdowns and ran for two as the Saints won their fifth straight over U High. Central, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, improved to 2-0 overall and in the Corn Belt Conference. “We kind of got in a rhythm in the second half,” Saints’ coach Bobby Moews said. “We figured out a little better what they were doing defensively. And Adam (Rebholz) started getting a better feel for it. I’m sure he was rather nervous.” Rebholz was six of nine passing in the first half, but threw an interception and his fumble was returned for a TD. He finished 15 of 21 for 249 yards after being suspended for last week’s opener. “I was a little antsy in my pantsy when I got out there,” Rebholz said. “But I got the hang of it. In the second half we were staying calm and it worked for us. Our line did a real good job in the second half.” After being held to minus-15 yards rushing in the first half, Central ran for 88 after halftime behind linemen Joe Ring, Nathan Yelton, Chris Highland, Jack Wombacher and Jay Dachauer. Brad Connor finished with 54 yards on 13 carries. Rebholz had scoring runs of five and 12 yards, the latter coming 43.8 seconds before halftime for a 21-12 lead. A six-yard TD pass to Drew Talkington upped it to 27-12 in the third quarter, but Vinny Chiodo answered for U High with an 85-yard kickoff return. Jake Todino’s two-point conversion pass to Caleb Katz made it 27-20. Central responded with 6-minute, 15-second drive capped by a 10-yard pass from Rebholz to fullback David Murray. Murray also had a 51-yard TD reception in the first half, shedding tacklers while rumbling down the sideline. “I try to get a head of steam and just keep running,” said the 5-foot-10, 205-pound Murray. “That’s why they call me Diesel.” Will Brucker bolted 80 yards to a second-quarter TD for U High (1-1, 1-1). The Pioneers’ other score came in the first quarter when Katz scooped up Rebholz’s fumble at the 3 and dived into the end zone. U High netted eight yards and no first downs in the second half, running 12 plays. “They definitely controlled the time of possession,” U High coach Dusty Burk said. “I thought it was kind of a sloppy game. Our kids played with a lot of heart and guts. That was nice to see. We just have to eliminate a lot of our little mistakes.” Central tight end/defensive end Dylan Johnson left in the first quarter after a hard hit. “It was better to be safe with him,” Moews said. “We missed him a lot, but Drew Talkington (four catches, 84 yards) stepped up and did a great job.” |
