Falcons fly to 2-0 start with win over Minutemen
GIBSON CITY -- GCMS running back Michael Romshek rushed for 146 yards and scored a touchdown to lead the Falcons to a 27-6 win over Lexington in a Heart of Illinois Conference game. Romshek picked up 104 of his yards on 18 first half carries. His 21-yard touchdown run with just over a minute to play in the first half put GCMS up 14-0 at the break. GCMS took a 7-0 first quarter lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Tyler Smith. GCMS utilized exceptional field position throughout, compiling nearly 10-minute time of possession advantage. “It seemed like we were constantly defending,” said Lexington coach Mike Castleman. “It’s really hard to get your rhythm going on offense when it feels like you’re constantly trying to dig yourself out of a hole.” Lexington (1-1) was in a hole early in the contest when GCMS (2-0) drove to their goal line on the Falcons’ second possession of the game. The Minutemen were able to stop four consecutive running plays to end the GCMS threat. But the remainder of the half was played in Lexington territory with the Minutemen able to get the ball past the 50 yard line only once in the closing seconds of the second quarter. GCMS was able to hold Lexington to only 88 yards rushing. T.J. Stinde picked up the bulk of the Minutemen’s yards on the ground, gaining 82 yards on 16 carries, most of them in the second half. “Our defense really did a great job,” said GCMS coach Mike Allen, who saw his Falcons win for the second straight week. “Our defense came out and took (the Lexington running game) away from them.” |
