FCW runs past Ridgeview
COLFAX – Before the Flanagan-Cornell-Woodland football team unleashed the full fury of a relentless rushing attack, the Falcons needed one pass to light the fuse. | Photo gallery A key third-down conversion toss from Adam Johnson to Alec Sramek kept FCW’s initial drive alive and running backs Kirk Beutke and Cam Blossom took it from there as the Falcons handled Ridgeview, 49-8, in Heart of Illinois Conference action Friday. “That short pass we got on third-and-4 was a huge play in this ballgame,” FCW coach Ted O’Boyle said. “Both teams were looking for confidence early and we were able to get that.” Beutke rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns and Blossom chipped in 69 yards and three TDs as the Falcons moved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. “We’ve been working on our offense pretty hard, trying to get that O line back to where we were last year. I think we got there,” said Beutke. “They did a great job, just awesome.” FCW held a total offense advantage of 228 to 10 in the opening half while rolling to a 35-0 bulge. “I was ecstatic at halftime,” O’Boyle said. “We’ve seen some flashes in these kids of that at times, but we haven’t seen it on a continuous basis. They put together one heckuva first half.” Blossom opened the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown run. After Craig Wilson blocked a Ridgeview punt, Beutke scored from 2 yards out. A T.J. Leonard interception on the Mustangs’ next snap led to a 14-yard scoring pass from Johnson to Brandon Gass. Blossom added TD runs of 2 and 12 yards, and Beutke also reached the end zone from 14 yards. FCW’s final touchdown was a 1-yard plunge by Drew Duffy. “They dominated us up front,” Ridgeview coach Mike Benton said. “They took away everything we tried to do. We couldn’t pass the ball, we couldn’t run the ball and we played entirely too much defense. When you do that, you get beat.” The Mustangs (0-2, 0-2) had 63 of their 77 yards of total offense on a final drive that saw Brandon Naas charge 1 yard for a touchdown. Austin Washington ran for the conversion. |
