WOOD RIVER -- Prosecutors Friday accused a Wood River man of first-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife Wednesday night. Vernon L. Coates III, 54, is charged in the death of his wife, Audrey Coates, 45.

He was being held Friday in lieu of a $1-million bail at the Madison County Jail.

Vernon Coates called police at 10:23 p.m. Wednesday from his home in the 200 block of South Central Avenue and said he had shot his wife in the mistaken belief that she was an intruder.

Audrey Coates was taken to Alton Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 10:53 p.m.

She may have been shot in the back.

" The minute I read the first story I knew this dude knew exactly what he was doing. He tried, gotta give him credit there, but at the same time he knew what he was doing. I only hope she didn't know he was the one that shot her. This goes on all over the world and the neighborhood has nothing to do with it. Just some guy that wanted out but didn't want to sacrifice his worldly possessions through divorce. "

" Um, floyd, did you already forget the AP story about the armed grandma who forced the guy breaking in to call the cops on himself?

Your biases are showing. "

" ADeputy - very well said. When I was an idealist I used to believe in banning guns. Then I got out into the real world and saw what it was actually like and have slowly been changing my mind. If you ban guns, the criminals will still find a way to get them. I'm growing tired of being told by society that we should back away and let criminals have whatever they want (think bank robberies) because it's better to give them your wallet than die. Sure, I don't want to die, but any criminal that can read the paper or watch the news knows they can go rob a bank or mug someone and the person will probably not give them a serious fight. Maybe if more people started fighting back, there'd be less crimes committed. Maybe not, but when I read stories about a grandma fighting back, I cheer. "

" I'm a middle of the road Republican/Democratic cop, who doesn't support the NRA, and believes BAD people with guns kill people, not responsible gun owners. Try and stereotype or label THAT like everyone here so quickly does to each other. If we didn't have guns, there would still be murders. Guns are a quick and easy way to distance one's self from the actual thought/action. It's easy to pull a trigger. The thought process of "physically" killing someone (i.e. stab, bludgeon), is very different and "connects" someone "mentally" to the action and it is enough to make some people think twice. Evil is in the suspects nature and they'll do it w/ or w/o a gun if their mind is set. Only bad neighborhoods have crime? My 2 cents. I'm willing to bet this guy knew what he was doing. What spouse doesn't announce their presence? "

" Here is some food for thought. there are 241 million registered autos in the USA.
There are 200 million privately owned guns. yet look at the death toll from both.
we better get rid of the cars and bars and get more guns. LOL "

" to: tatbtime--

If you read the article carefully, you will see that the wife was NOT actually "breaking in" to her own house, but rather "entering" the home, and the husband claims that he
THOUGHT someone was "breaking in"...that could be due to the fact that he heard a noise upon waking up, or any number of sounds that may have led him to believe someone was breaking in..Maybe the sound of the door opening (if she used her keys to get in) was enough to make him think someone was breaking in. WRONG: People kill people, firearms are sometimes the method. People kill people with kitchen knives, saws, hatchets, baseball bats, etc. "

" sounds staged and suspicious to me. It is very rare that a spouse that lives in the home would be breaking in, you can knock, ring bell, hollar, or whatever if you forget your key. This is very strange in every way. I have never seen such things as I have in the past few months, what is going on? "

" Thanks buddy for giving firearms a bad rep AGAIN. You have to identify your target BEFORE you shoot. At her age, since the Pantagraph did not give his, he would probably NOT be suffering from Alzheimers or related dementia. Were they having marrital problems and he did an Italian divorce and is covering it up this way? What time of night? He was not expecting his wife to come home? She didn't use her house key to get in? Do they have residential burglaries on a regular basis down there? This is a sadly tragic situation. There is never a reason to shoot one's spouse, that is what divorce is for. "
