Area clinics offering ample opportunity for flu shots
BLOOMINGTON -- The McLean, Livingston and Woodford county health departments have scheduled their flu shot clinics for next month, and OSF PromptCare locations announced when they will have the vaccine available. “Our statewide supplier has informed us that there will be an ample supply of vaccine available this flu season,” said Bob Keller, director of the McLean County Health Department. The health department’s Bree Davis said the department had received its entire order of vaccine and will begin taking calls for flu shot appointments on Monday. Health officials expect the supply to be plentiful this fall, so almost anyone who wants a flu shot should be able to get one. The influenza vaccine is not recommended for anyone younger than 6 months old, anyone with an egg allergy or anyone with a fever at the time they want the vaccine. Influenza is a viral infection of the nose, throat, bronchial tubes and lungs. While symptoms — such as fever, chills, cough and soreness — generally last several days, more serious illness may require hospitalization. McLean County Health Department flu shot clinics are for county residents at high risk of flu complications: people age 60 and older and those with a chronic disease or immune system disorder. Livingston County Health Department’s flu and pneumonia vaccine clinics are walk-in clinics for anyone who wants the vaccination. Woodford County Health Department’s flu clinics are walk-in clinics for adults and children 6 months and older. OSF PromptCare locations will offer walk-in flu vaccine clinics during regular hours beginning Oct. 1 for high-risk patients, including children 6 months to 5 years old, pregnant women, people older than age 50, people who live in nursing homes and people with chronic illnesses. Beginning Oct. 15, the general public can obtain flu vaccine at any PromptCare location. Locations are in Eastland Medical Plaza II, Bloomington, and the Center for Health at Fort Jesse, Normal, which are open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, and at the Center for Health at Nord Farms, Bloomington, which is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Earlier this week, BroMenn Medical Group offices said they are setting clinic dates for their patients, while Carle Clinic, Bloomington, announced public flu shot clinics 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 21, 22, 28 and 29. Other area counties have not yet announced their flu shot clinics.
