Moraine View rally draws 1,000-plus people protesting closure
LEROY -- Judy and Richard Riebe joked with each other Saturday morning as they sat at a picnic table beside the lake at Moraine View State Recreation Area. | Photo Gallery | Video The Riebes, of rural LeRoy, live near the park, which is one of 11 Illinois parks slated for closure at the end of November as lawmakers wrestle over the state’s budget. The LeRoy couple were among roughly 1,000 people who attended a rally Saturday morning at the park, protesting its possible closure. This is the second rally in as many weeks in an effort to keep area state parks open. About 500 people attended a rally last week at Weldon Springs State Recreation Area near Clinton. Richard Riebe described how many of his childhood days were spent at the park, with nights spent at his friend’s house -- now the site of the park’s concession stand. “I would walk through the woods to go home,” he said. “Ran through the woods was more like it because you were afraid bears would get you,” his wife added with a laugh. The park’s possible closure strikes a nerve with a variety of people, said rally leader Phil Warlow from the McLean County Wheelers. “It’s not just one group affected by this,” Warlow said. “It’s the bikers, hunters, fishers, campers, horseback riders, picnickers. It’s everybody -- every age and every walk of life that will have something taken away from them if this park is closed.” To help illustrate that point, Carson Satchwell and Coleman Smith shared stories with the crowd about what the park means to them. Satchwell, an eighth-grader from LeRoy, said the park is a great spot for hiking, fishing and photography. And for Smith, of Wapella, the park has been a camping destination for his family and friends since 1963. State Rep. Dan Brady, R-Bloomington, and state Rep. Keith Sommer, R-Morton, encouraged the crowd to sign petitions that will be delivered to Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s office early this week. More than 6,500 signatures have been collected so far. Also, Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn set up an online petition drive that can be viewed at www.saveourstateparks.org. Brady said the Illinois House has done its part to adjust the state’s budget to keep the parks open but now it is up to the Illinois Senate. The Senate is expected to convene this week and could take up the budget issue that may keep open the parks and 13 historic sites, including the David Davis Mansion in Bloomington. Brady and Sommer said the General Assembly needs to find a dedicated source of funding for the state parks, such as a gate fee. |
