Brad Pitt donates $100,000 to support gay marriage

LOS ANGELES -- Brad Pitt has donated $100,000 to fight California's November ballot initiative that would overturn the state Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage.

It's the first time voters will be asked to ban same-sex marriage in a state where gay couples already have won the right to wed. Same-sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts and California.

It's the first time voters will be asked to decide the issue in either California or Massachusetts - the states where gays have won the right to wed.

"Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn't harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8," Pitt said Wednesday.

Trevor Neilson, Pitt's political and philanthropic adviser, told The Associated Press that Pitt was surprised that his colleagues in the entertainment industry had not donated more money to support the battle against Proposition 8.

Earlier in the week, Pitt and Angelina Jolie announced they donated $2 million to help fight HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis in Ethiopia.

" re: meh
exactly

just because YOUR religion says something is wrong does not mean what you think is right and that the whole world has to live by it. "

" All who take part in any facet of citizenship deserve to be commended. No matter how little one has they always have more than someone else- and there are always those less fortunate than we. Some of us may personally choose different ways to do our part- and different charities or causes to give to- but individual choice is as important here as anywhere. Judge Mr. Pitt's cause of choice in this matter if you must- but remember that that opens YOUR choice up for judgment by others as well.

I'd like to encourage ALL to take part and do more... for a neighbor, a neighborhood, a church, a school, a shelter, a hospital, a class of folks, a devastated city, or a starving nation. Time, goods, talents, money- whatever you have to spare. ALL of us have needed- or will need something from others at some point in our lives.

Remember this one thought: If we ALL give more than we take- well... can you just IMAGINE that? "

" I for one am tired of seeing and hearing about Brad Pitt, Angelia Jolie, and Jennifer Anniston. They are so into themselves it isn't funny. I agree, give some of that money to help the ones in real need (of course, they don't live in our world), they live in a place called "MY WORLD" and it is hard for them and other stars to know how to help others. Gay Marriage, I am tired of hearing about that too, Ellen is making me sick over it, get on with it, don't shove it down my throat, I think it is sickning. I am not supposed to say that, but they can hammer their point home. Why do they need money anyway? I am so confused, this Hollywood and Star stuff is just insane. Now Brad and Angelina have all of those children, and what is to become of them, what values will they have? Are they really better off? What is happening in America? I love my country, but right now I am disappointed in its inhabitents, at least some of them. Thanks "

" Pastafarian
Pitt has done an enormous amount for New Orleans. Give the man credit for that. It's a lot more than than many in his position. This latest deal though is for publicity and doesn't show a lot of wisdom wtih ones money...but it's his to do as he pleases. "

" To Woo: Brad Pitt has done more for the people of New Orleans than most. He has set up a foundation to build afordable safe housing and is very involved, not just some vanity charity.

To those that wish he would invest in a bible: Maybe you should invest in lessons in compassion and non-judgmentalness. If you don't like gay marriage, don't have one. I don't like organized religion yet I don't put forth legislation banning the practice of it. If your supreme being does not abide gay marriage, I'm sure he/she/it/they will take care of business in the hereafter.

Peace be with you "

" I see this as just another publicity stunt by Bradjolina. Those who favor - and oppose - homosexual marriage do so for reasons unrelated to the testimonials of these two celebrity egomaniacs. For them, a hundred grand is just chump change. Still, they have wasted their cash. "

" THATS GREAT BUT HOW ABOUT ALL THESE RICH STARS GIVING TO FAMILYS THAT ARE LOOSEING THEIR HOMES AND STRUGGLEING JUST TO FEED THEIR FAMILYS. ITS NOT THEIR DUTY TO DO SO BUT SURE WOULD BE A WONDERFULL WAY TO GIVE BACK TO THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST. "
