CCHS girls cross country takes Spartan Classic crown

Tri-Valley High School’s Stephanie Brown and PBL’s Tom Pacey won individual titles, while Central Catholic’s No. 3-ranked Class 1A squad won the girls team crown in Saturday’s Spartan Classic at St. Joseph.

The Saints scored 64 points in the girls race, well ahead of second-place St. Joseph-Ogden (101) in the 23-team field. Brown covered the 1.97-mile course in 11 minutes, 17.86 seconds to beat Central Catholic’s Kelly Curran by 17 secconds. Tremont’s Jamee Holmes was third and Central Catholic’s Kerry Pelton fourth.

Pacey clocked 15:12.83 over a 2.97-mile course to beat Parker Thompsen of Tremont by less than three seconds. John Curran of Central Catholic placed third to lead the Saints to a fourth-place finish among 28 teams with 150 points. Bureau Valley and Urbana Uni-High had 126 points each, with Bureau Valley winning the tie-breaker.
