Normal man ID'd in fatal motorcycle crash near Colfax

COLFAX -- A Normal man was likely dead before a fire broke out after his motorcycle collided with a semitrailer truck loaded with corn Friday southwest of Colfax, the McLean County coroner said Saturday.

Allen D. Monroe, 40, of Normal was riding eastbound on Illinois 9 near County Road 3100 East when he apparently tried to pass the eastbound truck, which was signaling to turn left. Monroe’s motorcycle collided with the turning truck between its cab and trailer, sparking the fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary evidence indicates Monroe died from multiple injuries suffered in the collision, Coroner Beth Kimmerling said Saturday. There is no evidence Monroe was alive when the fire broke out after the crash, she said.

The truck’s driver, Robert Hill, 78, no residence available, was transported to OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington. Hill was no longer listed as a patient Saturday morning, and an Illinois State Police report indicates he was not injured.

Monroe was identified using dental records, she said. Forensic toxicology tests have been ordered.

Monroe’s speed may have contributed to the crash, which is being investigated by state police and the coroner’s office.

" Obviously a helmet won't save you from a fire. But it can save you from having your brains smeared all over the interstate. It seems kind of dumb that a driver of an automobile can be ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt, yet there is no law forcing bikers to wear helmets. They probably have the same success rate: for instance sometimes a seat belt does NOT save lives, but they are successful the majority of the time. Same with helmets. "

" SkaterMom: If this were a memorial or Obituary site, then yes, I'd say you have a point. However, this is the comments sections for news articles. You those rights in the constitution everyone is hollering about to remember? Free speech is one of them. Besides, I think the fact that he wasn't wearing a helmet is imperative. Perhaps this story will urge other bikers to wear helmets as protection. Besides, if it were a car wreck, whether or not the victim were wearing a seatbelt would have been noted. "

" I think you all should be ashamed of yourselves. The man is gone, his family is suffering and all you can comment on is that he was not wearing a helmet??? And some of the morbid comments...unbelieveable. "

" I was in an accident bout 7 years ago with a motorcycle. He was not wearing a helmet and he actually hit me. I was accused automatically becase I was in a car. He passed away in front of me, just me and him. Motorcyles are very dangerous and sometimes they are very hard to notice and avoid. This gentleman came out of nowhere and just changed mine and his lives forever. I wish the families peace and hope they can get through this. Its hard and On August 28 every year I think I will forget and I don't. I probably never will. God Bless "

" I attended classes with Allen and he worked for a time with my father. And although I didn't know him very well, I can agree with thomb that he always had a smile on his face, even when things got him down. He touched many with his life and I feel deeply for those who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace. "

" allen monroe was an awesome human he inspired me and most whom he met in many ways. my prayers go to all who those who feel as large a loss as i do. he was a gulf war vet, had many aspirations. and just as important he had drive to see those aspirations come to fruition. he had a willingness to help out others even if he just thought you may need it. his attitude was contagious, i pray it infected me, and never did he enter a room not beaming a smile and wishing all in it a hearty hello. or a great day. and often because of it at least that part of it was better. as i knew him he died like he lived fast and full throttle i will miss you. " I used to ride until some lady hit a friend of mine and he lost his leg. I decided I'd rather have the car protect my legs, rather than my legs protect my bike! There's other ways to get the same free spirit feeling and the wind in your hair.

I'm glad he didn't suffer through the fire. The helmet, though, may well have saved his life even though there was a fire. If he had been able to maintain consciousness after the impact and was wearing the proper protective outter attire, then he could have done the "stop, drop, and roll" to get the flames out. Or the trucker could have put the fire on him out. Being alert saves lives, and that means keeping your brain intact. "

" I feel so badly for both families. Please, people, slow down and be more careful on the roads - especially during the harvest. My thoughts and prayers are with Al's family. It would be devastating to lose someone in that way. I hope their family and friends can help them through this. "

" The first article in the newspaper regarding this indicated the victim could not be identified and that family could not be notified due to not being able to identify the CHARRED remains. Therefore, if he was burned so badly, HOW would a helmet have saved his life? I'm all for wearing helmets, but there are many, many times that hemets do not save lives and if this man was burned as badly as first stated, it is very possible the helmet would not have saved his life. Either way, this is SAD and my sympathies go to his family and friends. "

" first off - my thoughts and prayers go to both families in the accident. Second, all facts should be reported in a motorcycle involved accident IRISHMAN, you can't take part of a puzzle and say what it is. It's true that a helmet might have not made a difference here, that's why I say a helmet should be choice but training should not be. Motorcycles are fun and safe when used properly. Responsibility is a learned trait, not a natural one. "

The Real Illini Fan wrote on Oct 4, 2008 1:09 PM:

" Why was the lack of a helmet part of the story?? Well... duh! Multiple injuries means the cumulation of the injuries led to the death. Maybe if he had a helmet on the total of the injuries might not have led to the death of this man. It is a factor in the death and should be noted. Maybe this will give someone else a clue that wearing a helmet might save a life. Thoughts and prayers to the family.... "

" HE was not wearing a helmet. WHY was that part of the story? He had multiple
injuries, plus the fire. My thoughts and prayers to the family. "
