Question: As Donald Trump became president in January, a new senator also was moving into the U.S. Senate — U.S. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Delaware. Why might he one day visit Evergreen Cemetery in Bloomington?
Answer: It'd be to visit his roots. Senator Coons' great-great-grandparents (William and Vesta Jane Brittin Ives) and his great-great-grandparents (Almon and Sarah Townsend Ives) are all buried there. One other famous Bloomington Democrat who ran out of an Ives gene pool is Adlai Stevenson II, the former Illinois governor, two-time presidential candidate and U.N. ambassador during the John F. Kennedy presidency. He, too, is buried at Evergreen Cemetery. (Thanks to B-N genealogist Roger Hughes for the tidbit.)
