NORMAL - Mum is the word regarding a strike-authorization vote Sunday by union workers at Mitsubishi Motors North America's plant in Normal, with both sides saying they have no immediate plans for public comment as they try to reach a deal before their labor agreement ends Aug. 28. | Mitsubishi union plans strike-authorization vote

The vote took place Sunday at UAW Local 2488. A joint statement released by Mitsubishi spokesman Dan Irvin and United Auto Workers spokesman Roger Kerson said the vote is a standard part of the negotiation process, which began in mid-July. The current labor agreement expires Aug. 28 at 11:59 p.m.

The statement did not indicate whether the workers voted for a strike authorization, nor did it indicate the number of workers who voted. An in-favor vote would have authorized the union to strike if negotiations fail to result in a new contract.

"Our mutual goal is to achieve an agreement that is in the best interests of members of UAW Local 2488 and their families; Mitsubishi Motors North America, and our community," the statement said.

"Both parties have agreed that neither the union nor the company will make any additional public comment regarding our ongoing negotiations."

Irvin said the plant currently has 1,366 union workers. At an unspecified date in August, the workforce will be reduced by 105 union workers who accepted a voluntary separation package the company offered in May. After those employees leave, the plant will have 1,565 total employees, including 1,261 union workers.

The union has voted favorably for strike authorization votes in the past. Mitsubishi workers went on a one-day strike in 2001.

The statement did not indicate whether the workers who will depart later this month participated in the vote.

Kerson and Ralph Timan, president of UAW Local 2488, did not immediately return phone calls asking for comment Sunday.
