BLOOMINGTON - Cooks can try their hand at creating "burritos as big as your head" in their own kitchens. The owners of La Bamba Mexican Restaurant locations in the Twin Cities will open a Hispanic-American grocery store that complements the fast-casual eatery.
The grocery store, which will include another La Bamba restaurant, is slated to open Wednesday in the former Mor-For-Less location at 1512 W. Market St. in west Bloomington.
"Everything you get at the restaurant, you're going to be able to buy it in the store, too," said Jose J. Aguas, who owns the grocery store as well as restaurants in downtown Bloomington, uptown Normal and Peoria with his brother Jose G. Aguas.
La Bamba Grocery, as it will be known, will carry mostly Hispanic foods but also will cater to American cuisine, Aguas said.
Customers will find a variety of tortillas and salsa, as well as produce and liquor, he said. A specialty butcher shop and bakery also are included in the 14,000-square-foot space, he said. Weekend specials include such popular ethnic fare as carnitas, or fried pork, and menudo, a soup made with vegetables and spices, Aguas said.
Shoppers also can enjoy a taste of the items in their carts at the La Bamba restaurant inside the grocery.
The restaurant will use the products on the shelves to make the food on the menu, Aguas said. Seating will be available for 20 to 25 people, he said.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Saturday, for both the restaurant and the grocery.
