BLOOMINGTON — Family clothing retailer H&M will open a store at Eastland Mall in Bloomington in the fall of 2018, the company confirmed Thursday morning.
The Swedish-based company will occupy 20,000 square feet in part of the former J.C. Penney space.
Another 20,000 square feet will be occupied by Planet Fitness. No plans have been divulged for the remaining 30,000 square feet.
The new store announcement had been expected.
Mall owner CBL Properties is still evaluating plans for the former Macy’s anchor space. Macy's closed in March 2017 and CBL purchased that property for $2 million, according to property transfer records.
Outback Steakhouse will move from the Landmark Plaza shopping center at 1409 N. Veterans Parkway to a new building being constructed in the northeast corner of the mall property.
Plans for the H&M redevelopment had been submitted to the city, but the national fashion retailer remained unnamed pending the signing of a lease agreement with the Chattanooga, Tenn.-based mall owner.
“We are thrilled to kick off 2018 by announcing a major anchor redevelopment project at Eastland Mall,” said Stephen Lebovitz, CEO and president of CBL Properties.
“The additions of H&M and Planet Fitness are a perfect example of our commitment to bringing a dynamic mix of uses to our centers," he added. "Dining, value and fitness are increasingly in demand, and we are pleased to deliver names that not only meet this demand, but elevate the overall customer experience.”
"We are always on the lookout for the best new locations," said H&M spokesman Patrick Shaner. "H&M is thrilled to be opening a new store at Eastland Mall in Bloomington and looks forward to providing more access to fashion for our customers and fans there."
In a statement, H&M said it offers "one-stop shopping" for clothing collections for ladies, men and teens, as well as a "store within a store" for accessories. The Eastland Mall location will also carry the H&M Kids collection for newborns to 14-year-olds.
"With the opening of the Eastland Mall location, H&M is proud to add employees to the current, ever-expanding total of approximately 16,000 U.S. employees," the firm said. Information about job opportunities is available at career.hm.com.
In 2017, H&M was the highest ranked fashion retailer on Forbes America’s Best Employers list and was named on Business of Fashion’s list of Best Companies to Work for in Fashion, the company noted. In 2013, H&M launched Garment Collecting, an in-store clothing recycling project and was the first global fashion company.
H&M has 523 locations across the country.
