BLOOMINGTON -- The historic Caboose restaurant and bar will temporarily close starting Saturday but is expected to reopen June 1 under new ownership.

Randy Gelsthorpe of Bloomington said he recently purchased The Caboose, 608 W. Seminary Ave., from owner Wayne Roley. Gelsthorpe, a first-time restaurant owner, said closing for a few days will give him time to replace the floor behind the bar, clean some equipment and make other renovations.

The Caboose will be open at 3 p.m. daily except for Sunday. The kitchen will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Breakfast and lunch may be added in the future, Gelsthorpe said.

The Caboose opened in 1938 as a grocery store near the Chicago & Alton railroad complex, turning into a restaurant in the 1950s.
