BLOOMINGTON — After an absence of two decades, Brown’s Chicken will return to the Twin Cities.

The new location is scheduled to open in late April at 2303 E. Washington St., Bloomington, the former location of Coconut Louie’s.

“Brown’s Chicken was here years ago before it was shut down,” said owner Saeed Ahmed. “I want to bring it back. It’s a Chicago franchise and many people here are from Chicago.”

Ahmed said renovations will begin soon, including an upgrade to the bathrooms. He is awaiting permit approval from the city.

“It’s going to be a nice sit-in restaurant,” said Ahmed, who added he plans to hire about 15 to 20 employees for the new location.

Brown’s Chicken will be a second restaurant in the Twin Cities owned by Ahmed, who currently runs Super JJ Fish and Chicken on West Market Street.

Brown’s will open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Bloomington’s former Brown’s Chicken location on East Vernon Avenue in Bloomington shuttered in the early 1990s. The chain restaurant has more than 30 locations in Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

Wish we could get a Famous Recipe back. Have been to the one in Danville and Arnold MO. and the chicken is just as good as I remember it

Actually- I agree- Hardee's had the BEST fried chicken ever. I left IL. for 13 years and then when I returned Hardee's chicken was GONE. What happened? HUGE loss. HUGE!

Browns was good chicken, however; Hardees was at least as good and killed them on price.
Browns tried to expand their menu to survive, but the damage was done. Then Hardees abandoned chicken. (you can still get Hardees chicken in other towns) leaving the market wide open. JJs has a poor location, but their menu is huge and looks very tempting. Popeyes is great, but you have to like the spice. (it carries over to their mild flavor) KFC is KFC. If you dont get there when the chicken is fresh out of the fryer, you really notice the difference. Where are the places that serve pan fried chicken?

With gas prices the way they are, a sit in the drive through lane may eat up those savings unfortunately.

I use to multi drive through some places, best fries one place, best shakes another but gas makes it tough now....
I know, live is so hard

Well- tried Stolfa's chicken tonight. It was good. Nice and light crust- cripsy too without being thick and heavy. Liked that. Mac & cheese was okay- slaw very good. I like that they included real butter for the roll and also placed a pair of bread slices in the bottom of the box to place the chicken pieces on to absorb potential grease to prevent it from leaking from the box onto my car seat- that was swift & careful thinking and their part. Would like to try their walleye next. :-)

What a strange location for a fast food chicken restaurant! Parking lot is small and there won't be any room for a drive thru. Surely there are better locations that are available.

A quote from you: "Buy your chicken at Popeye's and your sides across the street at Popeye's" --- HUH????? ........... Go to Popeye's to get chicken, then go across the street to another Popeye's? What am I missing?

'Ahmed said renovations will begin soon, including an upgrade to the bathrooms.'

Good idea. Twenty years ago, when I could still handle all the grease and 'fine dining' you could throw my way, 'Brown's' still took me to the brink. For those lookin' to place a bet as to whether they will spend more time in Brown's dining room or their 'upgraded' restrooms, from experience I'd say it's a 'tossup'. No pun intended.

Actually- I just checked-out the Super JJ's menu online and their "Jack Salmon" is Whiting.

I love this kind of food and MUST try!

    They have gizzards!

Plus a rather large variety of fish/chicken/sandwich items- and their sides look great: slaw, pot salad, mac salad, crab salad, spagehtti, okra, hush puppies, popperz, pickled jalps, fries, o-rings, cheese stix, zucchini stix, plus 20oz bottles and 2 litres of Pepsi/RC products. And their desserts look to include: cheesecake, peach cobbler, banana pudding, cake, butter cookies, 8 flavors of milkshakes and frozen lemonade.

They have different rotating daily specials, combo plates, fish by the piece, cater larger volumes- and the banner I just saw on their building says they now deliver!

Used to like KFC best until I tried Popeye's. Like both their spicy AND mild. Now KFC tastes extra-salty to me.

A hint: this is what I've learned- KFC's chicken is priced HIGH. But their sides are cheaper. Popeye's chicken is far cheaper- but their sides are priced HIGH. (Opposite of KFC) So if budget is big for you as it is for me- buy your chicken at Popeye's and your sides across the street at Popeye's and you'll get the BEST total pricing. :-)

I will try the new Browns when it opens. Have been meaning to try JJ's too as I live near there- just have not yet. I hear JJ's has salmon- and as a former Alaskan chef this EXCITES ME!)

Also heard constant good things about Harold's chicken when it was here- both on W. Market and the Normal location (both closed now, I beleive) but sadly I never tried it.

Fried chicken is one of my all-time FAV grub-meals. LOVE it!

And included in "My Last Supper" if I ever end up in prison on death row will be a platter of my mama's Sunday fried chicken- of course!

Super JJs is closed more than it is open. Don't see how they make any money. As for Browns chicken: greasy as hell and over priced.
