BLOOMINGTON — Twin City fans of burgers and shakes can get both when That Burger Joint and Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store open Wednesday in Bloomington.
The two-part restaurant, which will open at 10 a.m. daily, took over and remodeled the former Carlos O’Kelly’s location at 2105 N. Veterans Parkway next to Chili's.
That Burger Joint is a fast-casual restaurant selling customized burgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, fries and patty melts.
Oberweis specializes in old-fashioned milkshakes, sundaes, homemade waffle cones and packaged quarts of ice cream.
The dual burger and shake store is the fifth in the state, with most locations in northern Illinois and one opening in November at 1905 S. Neil St. in Champaign.
Oberweis President and CEO Joe Oberweis said each side of the restaurant has separate decor and seating, but customers can move between each section and order from both menus.
“Renovation took longer than we hoped, but the finished product is beautiful,” said Oberweis.
Renovation of the 5,000-square-foot space included the addition of a drive-thru. Oberweis said it’s the first drive-thru for the chain where customers can order from both menus.
Nearly 80 employees, mostly part time, have been hired. Oberweis said many of the employees are Illinois State University students who already work at Burger Joint/Oberweis locations in Chicago.
Oberweis said “nothing significant” is planned for the first day of operation on Wednesday. “We’re excited but a little nervous. There’s been more chatter about this location than any other location I can remember,” he said.
“We ask people to be a little patient on our first day. We hope to make a really great impression and we’re excited to be here.”
Store hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Orders are available for dine-in, carry-out and drive-thru. Delivery options may be added in the future, said Oberweis.
