BLOOMINGTON -- A new Subway sandwich shop is expected to open in downtown Bloomington in early June, the owner said Thursday.

The new Subway at 109 W. Jefferson St. will occupy the former home of Blimpie's Subs and Salads, which closed in November. Subway franchise owner Marty Hogan, who was not involved in the Blimpie's, said he has had an eye on moving into downtown for years.

"It kind of just made sense that now was right time to do it," he said, noting the Blimpie's closure.

Hogan owns 14 Twin City Subway shops with his brothers under the operating name BN Retail, and 16 more in other communities. Remodeling of the downtown shop is underway, and Hogan said he wants to open in the first half of June to draw in downtown workers who may wander out more on their lunch breaks in the summer.

Hours are not finalized, but Hogan said he should be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. on weekdays, plus some additional hours on Saturday initially to try and capture farmers market traffic. It will not be open Sundays.

The property is owned by Heritage Enterprises.
