NORMAL — Mitsubishi Motors continues to show strong year-over-year sales despite the looming closure of its Normal plant.
The company, in a statement issued Tuesday, said its August sales were the best since 2008. The Normal-built Outlander Sport continues "to be volume leader and posted its best August ever," the statement said.
The Sport is the only model built at Normal, the company's only U.S. plant, but it also is manufactured at overseas plants.
The Normal plant is expected to cease manufacturing in November and close next spring. The facility is for sale.
The Outlander, the larger of the two models, had its best sales month in August since 2003. The company credited a new model design, which debuted in August, for overall company sales.
Overall, the company sold 8,289 vehicles in August, an increase of 22.1 percent from August 2014. It's the 18th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases. Year-to-date sales are up 24.4 percent over the same period in 2014, the company said.
Total August sales for the Outlander were 2,188, an increase of 92.9 percent over August 2014.
The company's electric car, i-MiEV, has dropped to 90 in 2015 from 134 in 2014. Mirage and Lancer models both sold more in 2015 than last year.
Overall year-to-year sales were up to 65,701 in 2015 from 52,807 in 2014.
