Couples Retreat, an adult comedy directed, we swear, by Peter Billingsley, aka Ralphie from "A Christmas Story." Vince Vaughn (who concocted the idea), Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell, Jean Reno and Faizon Love star in the tale of four Midwestern couples who travel to a tropical island resort to either work on their marriage or just enjoy some fun in the sun. The sun-and-funners soon discover, alas, that participation in the resort's couples therapy is absolutely mandatory.
Personal appearances, pt. 1: Twice in the week ahead, the Normal Theater will not only show a movie, but also feature the movie's maker(s) in person. First up, at 7 p.m. Saturday, is The Toe Tactic, a mix of live action and animation from Emily Hubley, who wrote, directed and animated the film about a woman besieged by a quartet of dogs from another dimension while coping with a personal emotional trauma. Hubley, the daughter of legendary animators Faith and John Hubley ("Watership Down"), will introduce the film and answer questions afterward.
Personal appearances, pt 2: At 7 p.m. Tuesday, the Normal Theater screens Hannah Free, which follows the lifelong relationship between two Midwestern women, alternating childhood sequences with present-day adult ones. The film's director, Wendy Jo Carlton, and one of its stars, Ann Hagemann, will introduce the film and answer questions afterward.
