BLOOMINGTON - Two of rock's bona fide legends have been added to the fall roster of Bloomington's U.S. Cellular Coliseum: Bob Dylan, who will headline a concert at 7 p.m. Oct. 20, with Elvis Costello as his opening act.
Tickets for the blockbuster pairing are priced at $39.50, $49.50 and $59.50, and go on sale at 10 a.m. Sept. 7 via regular Coliseum channels, including (866) 891-9992 and www.uscellularcoliseum.com
In addition to Costello as Dylan's "special guest," the bill includes a third singer, Amos Lee, the Philadelphia singer-songwriter whose songs have appeared in such TV series as "Grey's Anatomy" and "House."
The announcement marks the third time in Twin Cities annals that news of a Dylan concert has been unveiled.
Costello, meanwhile, is making his first-ever local appearance.
Dylan fans had to wait until the '90s before he was willing or able to play a Bloomington-Normal venue.
In November 1990, the man born Robert Alan Zimmerman 66 years ago made his concert debut here in Illinois State University's Braden Auditorium. The ISU Entertainment Committee-sponsored show drew close to a full house.
According to a Pantagraph account of the night, "Dylan came on stage with a four-piece band that gave the audience spirited versions of some of his finest material." However, "some fans in the audience didn't recognize many of the tunes at first, as they seemed to have been modernized."
Nearly a decade later, the singer returned, with the imposing task of filling ISU's Redbird Arena instead of Braden Auditorium.
Certainly the show was one of the oddest local concert pairings of that year or any year: Appearing with Dylan at the Feb. 11, 1999, show was The Brian Setzer Orchestra, then riding high that year with the swing dance revival that swept America.
The show drew around 6,500, and from the Pantagraph account, it appeared as many in the audience had showed up to see the former Stray Cats leader's jive act as had paid to see Dylan's somewhat more staid performance of his catalogue.
The current concert tour with Costello is timed to the impending Oct. 1 release of "Dylan," a career-spanning, three-CD retrospective of his music that is being described as "definitive."
Costello, meanwhile, has been extending his ever-changing musical horizons in recent years via such offbeat projects as a collaboration with jazz pianist Marian McPartland and an opera based on author Hans Christian Andersen's love for Swedish soprano Jenny Lind.
