Scheduled to open in area theaters next weekend (Dec. 8) is just one new arrival:
Just Getting Started: Latest in the "seniors gone wild" genre of giving veteran actors like Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones the right to headline a big Christmas season release, just like Lemmon and Matthau back in their "Grumpy Old Men" heyday. Freeman plays the freewheeling, high-living manager of a luxury Palm Springs retirement resort. His big man on campus status is challenged by the arrival of a retired military man, played by Jones, who checks in, leading to a showdown of the AARP-ready alpha males. Rene Russo, now playing mature woman roles herself, is the romantic interest caught betwixt. Oh, it's a Christmas movie because it all takes place during same, including the kidnapping caper that follows. Joe Pantoliano, (the, alas, late) Glenne Headly, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Elizabeth Ashley and George Wallace co-star.
Vincent van GO!: A reminder that Loving Vincent, the all-oil-painted Vincent Van Gogh animated drama profiled as the cover story for the Nov. 16 GO! section, opens its Normal Theater run this weekend, with screenings at 8 p.m. (not 7 p.m. per usual) Thursday and Saturday, followed by a second weekend, at 7 p.m. (not 8 p.m. a la the first weekend) Dec. 8 and 10.
