Scheduled to open in area theaters next weekend (Jan. 26) are:
Hostiles: The latest from director Scott Cooper ("Crazy Heart," "Out of the Furnace") is a western starring Christian Bale as an embittered and (a la John Wayne's Ethan Edwards in "The Searchers") racist Cavalry captain ordered to accompany a Cheyenne war chief and his family back to their tribal lands in Montana. The mission, which he's forced to accept, has a hitch: the war chief (Wes Studi) has been the Cavalry man's mortal enemy for years due to a conflict that killed many of his friends. Rosamund Pike, Jesse Plemons, Ben Foster and Adam Beach co-star.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure: In the alleged epic finale to the "Maze Runner" saga, Thomas leads his group of escaped Gladers on their allegedly final and most dangerous mission yet. This entails breaking into the legendary Last City, aka the WCKD-controlled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all. The payoff: Anyone who makes it out alive will get answers to the questions the Gladers have been asking since they first arrived in the maze. Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Giancarlo Esposito, Aidan Gillen, Ki Hong Lee, Barry Pepper, Will Poulter and Patricia Clarkson head the cast.
Dress for success: Time to don your collars and fleas for the January edition of Dress-Up Movies at the Normal Theater ... Rock Dog, barking up the right tree for a free showing at 1 p.m. Saturday. It's the 2016 animated hit about the music-loving Tibetan mastiff who is turned into a wannabe rock star when a radio falls from the sky into his paws.
