Coming Soon

Scheduled to open in area theaters next weekend (Jan. 11) are:

A Haunted House: From the creators of “Scary Movie” … enough said? It’s billed as “another hilarious horror spoof, a parody of the ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise.” Marlon Wayans (who also co-penned the script) and Essence Atkins play a pair of newlyweds who move into their dream house and they quickly find they’re not alone. But it’s not the house that’s haunted; it’s the wife that is possessed with spirits. Everyone, from a priest to a team of modern day ghost busters, is called in to play exterminator. Cedric the Entertainer and Nick Swardson co-star.

Gangster Squad: Set in 1949 L.A., this mob drama stars Sean Penn as Brooklyn-based Mafia king Mickey Cohen, who calls the shots from out East, with more than a little help from the cops and politicians under his big thumb. Fighting back is a small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders, led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling) who come together in classic “untouchables” fashion. Nick Nolte, Robert Patrick, Michael Pena, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie and Emma Stone co-star.

Zero Dark Thirty: Director-producer Kathryn Bigelow’s encore to her 2008 Oscar winner, the Iraq war-set “Hurt Locker.” It’s a similarly Oscar-bound companion piece that charts the decade-long campaign of an elite team of intelligence and military operatives, working in secret across the globe and devoted to a single goal: finding and eliminating Osama bin Laden. Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Ehle, Mark Strong, Kyle Chandler and Edgar Ramirez star.<</p>
