NORMAL -- A summer conference for more than 100 choral directors from around the Midwest will be this weekend on the Illinois State University campus and include a public concert at 8 p.m. Thursday.
The free performance, in ISU's Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall, will feature Bloomington-Normal's award-winning barbershop group, the Sound of Illinois Chorus.
Also featured will be The Directors Chorus, comprised of music educators, church musicians and college students attending the conference.
The group will be led by Charles Bruffy, director of both the Kansas City Chorale and Phoenix Chorale.
The conference, the Illinois Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association Summer ReTreat, features an array of sessions and workshops.
Besides Bruffy, other symposium guests include Stephen Hatfield, an internationally noted composer-arranger from Victoria, British Columbia, and Pearl Shangkuan, professor of choral music at Calvin College and a clinician and adjudicator throughout the country.
