CHAMPAIGN—Prairie Center Health Systems held its 23rd annual Recognition Reception for the 2012 National Red Ribbon Campaign.
The event was held Oct. 16 at Hawthorne Suites in Champaign.
The theme of this year’s campaign was “It’s Up to Me to Be Drug-Free.”
Among the school contest winners were two GCMS Elementary School students.
Lane Shoemaker, a third grade student at GCMS Elementary, won in the second-third graders bookmark design. Shoemaker won a bicycle for his efforts.
Shoemaker is a member of the third grade class taught by Mrs. Hohulin.
Chase Pondel, a fifth grade student at GCMS Elementary, won in the fourth-fifth grade bookmark design and also received a bicycle for his efforts.
Pondel is a member of the fifth grade class taught by Mr. White.
Shoemaker is the son of Scott and Jamie Shoemaker while Todd and Shawna Pondel are the parents of Pondel.
Also present for the reception were GCMS Elementary School Principal Justin Kean and Assistant Principal Gene Everett.
University of Illinois coaches Kevin Hambly and John Groce were also present to discuss how they want their players to be role models for kids and to stay drug free.
The two coaches stayed and signed autographs after the awards ceremony.
