buy this photo “Tundra” was the standout winner among the trio of new comics. Among online voters, for example, 69 percent voted for “Tundra,” 24 percent voted for “Mutts,” and just 7 percent liked “DeFlocked.”

One thing's certain: People are serious about their comics. More than 1,200 votes were cast after we asked you, our readers, to vote for a replacement comic for "For Better or For Worse," which Lynn Johnston stopped drawing full time in August.

And one more thing's certain: For every comic, there's somebody out there who loves it with a passion, and somebody else who hates that same comic with equal passion.

So when we asked for your opinions, we got them.

People attached notes and comments on their ballots. They scrawled "Yuck!" on comics they didn't like; they pleaded for ones they love.

Through it all, some insights emerged from the survey:

• "Tundra" was the standout winner among the trio of new comics. Among online voters, for example, 69 percent voted for "Tundra," 24 percent voted for "Mutts," and just 7 percent liked "DeFlocked."

• Though up to half of the "For Better or For Worse" strips are repeats set in another time, readers still feel a cosmic connection to the strip. Many people are even eager for another nostalgic ride through the lives of the Patterson family that they came to know over the strip's 29-year history.

The bottom line, then, is this: The Pantagraph's daily comics page will host "Tundra," a strip by Alaskan Chad Carpenter. And we're bringing back "For Better or For Worse."

Here's the rub, though: We can't make two comics fit the space of the one we set out to replace. Again we turned to readers for help. The comics survey showed some comics that drew more boos than bravos.

Tops among them was "Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee." Among voters who singled out "Edison Lee," more than two-thirds deemed it one of our worst comics. "Edison Lee" runs six days a week; a strip available on Sundays only, "Foxtrot," fills "Edison Lee's" Sunday spot.

"Foxtrot" remains popular, so we'll keep it in the Sunday lineup and run "Tundra" Monday through Saturday in place of "Edison Lee." That way we can run "For Better or For Worse" every day without interrupting the storyline.

Because of time needed to make the change, "For Better or For Worse" won't start up again until Nov. 9. Tundra already is running.

In the meantime, here are some other things we learned from the survey:

• Online voters and paper ballot voters didn't always come to the same conclusions. While the top comics among online voters were "Zits," "Baby Blues," "Foxtrot," "Hi and Lois" and "Garfield," print ballots favored "Family Circus," "Blondie," "Hi and Lois," "Beetle Bailey" and "Peanuts."

• Voted worst in the online survey: "Dinette Set" (which runs Sundays only), "Doonesbury," "Cathy," "Prince Valiant" (Sundays only) and "Mary Worth." Voted worst on the paper ballots: "Edison Lee," "Doonesbury," "Dilbert," "The Piranha Club" and "Mary Worth."

• Some of the more seasoned strips have the most solid support. Comics such as "Family Circus," "Hi and Lois" and "Peanuts" have legions of fans and few foes.

• There's still interest out there in comics that aren't even available. "Steve Roper," for example, hasn't been an option since it ceased publication in 2004, yet nearly a dozen people asked for it.
