GIBSON CITY - It's indicative that things are going well for a football team when it can increase an already substantial halftime lead by scoring three touchdowns in the first four minutes of the second half without running an offensive play.
That's exactly what happened for Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley on Saturday. After the Falcons had stormed to a 36-12 halftime lead, they broke the game wide open with second-half scores on a blocked punt, a fumble recovery and an interception return on the way to a 60-19 rout of Mercer County in a second-round Class 2A playoff game.
"We're pumped up," said GCMS coach Mike Allen. "Everything clicked today. I thought if we played up to our potential, that we could give them a very good game. We surpassed all expectations today. The way the kids played today, if we continue to play like that we're going to be awfully tough to beat."
GCMS (10-1) advances to the quarterfinals for only the second time in school history. The Falcons will play Kewanee-Weathersfield-Annawan on Saturday. The game time will be announced Monday.
GCMS standout Michael Romshek rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as the Falcons rolled to a 30-0 advantage in the second quarter.
Romshek added another touchdown during the third-quarter flurry when he made a leaping one-handed interception and returned it 85 yards to give GCMS a 54-12 lead.
"It was definitely a big surprise - let's put it that way," Romshek said of his leaping grab. "I was very surprised that I even caught it."
Earlier in the third quarter, GCMS freshman Jordyn Schultz blocked a Golden Eagles' punt, picked it up on one hop and scooted 34 yards for a touchdown.
On Mercer County's next possession, a fumbled pitchout was grabbed on the run by the Falcons' Stephan Birt and returned 20 yards for another GCMS touchdown.
Romshek's first-half touchdowns came on runs of 62, 34 and 8 yards. He finished with 240 yards on 22 carries.
Birt also had a 1-yard TD run and tossed a 34-yard scoring pass to Cody Gaesser in second quarter. He completed all six of his attempts for 157 yards. Gaesser caught four of the passes for 115 yards.
Mercer County finishes at 8-3.
