BLOOMINGTON - Prosecutors filed charges Tuesday against a 41-year-old man accused of stabbing another man in the chest with a pocketknife Sunday evening at an east-side convenience store.
Derrick L. Travis of Chicago was held in lieu of $1,000 on charges of aggravated battery and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon in connection with the stabbing at Colonial Plaza Shell, 1504 E. Empire St. He is accused of stabbing John Way, 51, of Northbrook Drive in Normal, who was treated and released from BroMenn Regional Medical Center.
The weapon charge indicates it was illegal for Travis to carry the knife because of a conviction for aggravated assault in a 2001 case in the state of Georgia.
Witnesses told officers the men argued before the stabbing, after which Way went into the convenience store and Travis walked to the nearby Kmart, 1608 E. Empire St., police said. Travis had a bloody pocketknife clipped to his belt when found near a jewelry display, police said.
