CARLOCK -- Pantagraph newspaper carrier Jesse Brandt delivered more than newspapers Monday.
When he spotted a car on fire in a driveway at 1 Brookline Drive, he called 911 about 5 a.m., around the same time as a neighbor, and then the two of them knocked on windows to wake up the residents.
"I jumped the fence and got to the back and banged on windows," said Brandt, 24. He said two people got out safely.
Capt. Mike Henning of the Carlock Fire Department said flames were coming from the car about 3 feet from the two-story home, which had an attached garage.
Damage to the house was limited to some vinyl siding, but a pickup truck parked next to the car was more severely damaged.
Henning said damage would have been much worse had the fire not been noticed and reported so rapidly.
"It was well on its way," he said of the fire.
