NORMAL - The Normal Community High School student who made a threat on the MySpace Web site has been identified and faces disciplinary action, officials said Thursday.

Officials in the Normal-based Unit 5 school district learned Tuesday night of the threat posted on the popular social network site. They told the public Wednesday, and police were called in to investigate.

"Evidence gathered to date suggests that all presently known threats or alleged threats to student or staff safety at NCHS are attributable to one individual," John Pye, assistant superintendent of operations and human resources for Unit 5, said Thursday.

The district is taking applicable disciplinary actions, he said, adding "Law enforcement is pursing any possible criminal charges."

Normal police said Thursday the investigation continues.

Unit 5 administrators had answered dozens of phone calls from concerned people as of Thursday.

Schools at all levels take any threats seriously, Pye said, especially after the Virginia Tech massacre and in light of the anniversary Friday of the 1999 Columbine High School shootings in Colorado.

"We continue to encourage timely reporting of any information related to safety and security of all our students and staff," he said.

Gibson City Melvin Sibley High School also responded this week to a rumor about a threat that dated to last week but was revived after Monday's shootings in Blacksburg, Va.

GCMS Superintendent Charles Aubry said Wednesday there were no specifics in the threat, but he wanted to assure parents that the school district was on top of it.

No new information was available about that case on Thursday. Gibson City police Chief Steve Cushman confirmed that several people were interviewed about the rumor and the investigation continues.
