PONTIAC - Three candidates for Pontiac mayor emerged Monday as the time for filing petitions to be on the spring election ballot ended Monday.
Ward 1 Alderman Bob Russell and newcomer Shawn Tate will compete in the February primary for the Republican nomination for mayor.
The winner of the primary will face Democrat Benjamin Helander in the April election.
In the race for Ward 1 alderman, incumbent John McGlasson is up against Scot Schickel in the GOP primary.
Russell's term as alderman is not up, but he will have to appoint someone to fulfill his remaining two years if he is elected mayor.
Two incumbents, Bill Kallas in Ward 2 and Curt Myers in Ward 4, are unopposed.
In Ward 3, Mason Hall and Randy Wittenberg are looking to fill the position left open by Matt Stock, who did not seek re-election.
Both are running in the Republican primary.
No one is listed as a candidate in Ward 5. Alderman Mike Stalter, who was appointed by Mayor Scott McCoy to fulfill the term of Stalter's late father, Don Stalter, did not seek re-election.
The position can be filled by a write-in candidate or an appointment by the new mayor.
City Treasurer Oscar Kohlman and city Clerk Shari Dunham, both incumbents, are unopposed.
