100 years ago
Sept. 5, 1908: The street railway is digging into its coffers for a lot of yellow and white paint. The winter cars are getting yellow paint while the summer cars are in service. The summer cars will be repainted white later. The cars have needed this treatment.
75 years ago
Sept. 5, 1933: The reopening of the Hotel Tilden-Hall at Madison and Washington created 51 jobs. Today's paper carried a group photo of the whole staff. 5,000 people came by when the hotel held an open house for the public the other night. (The site is now a parking lot.)
50 years ago
Sept. 5, 1958: Police went checking for wheel tax violators and caused a traffic jam at Washington and Madison Streets. They made one arrest. The deadline for Bloomington drivers to buy their stickers was Sunday.
25 years ago
Sept. 5, 1983: The pedestrian underpass at Main and College in Normal should be finished in November. The project has been under construction for about a year and a half.
