Sept. 4, 1908: The state is experimenting with a new asphalt oil road, which should give rural motorists waterproof, dustproof driving. It is also expected to be immune to winter frost. The product is cheaper than macadam by $2000-2500 per mile.

75 years ago

Sept. 4, 1933: The Tilbury Flash placed second in the 200-inch displacement class of the International Air Races in Chicago. The tiny Bloomington plane was flown by Lyman Voelpel of Chicago. Art Carnahan of Bloomington, the usual pilot, was on hand to watch.

50 years ago

Sept. 4, 1958: Judge William Radliff sentenced Archie Llamon to ten years in prison for the 1957 hammer murder of Rolland Peckham. Llamon had previously been sentenced to seven years in the killing of his ex-wife Inez. He'll serve his time at Joliet.

25 years ago

Sept. 4, 1983: The Threshermen's parade is a spectacle in Pontiac, keeping agriculture history alive. The 4-H park turns smoky as the steam machines pass, but Wendell Lighty of Saunemin loves it. He announces the hour-long parade and enriches it with his commentary.
