IOWA CITY, Iowa - Authorities on Wednesday identified the young girl who died after a Bloomington man's single-engine plane crashed Tuesday morning in eastern Iowa.
Sydney Blanton, 2, who was headed home after being treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals for a club foot, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:12 p.m. Tuesday, about eight hours after the plane crashed, according to the Johnson County medical examiner's department. She had been hospitalized with her mother and pilot Lewis Martin of Bloomington after the crash about 10 a.m. near an airport in Iowa City.
A nursing supervisor at the hospital could not provide any information on Martin's condition Wednesday, but Iowa City police Sgt. Troy Kelsay said Martin and the mother both had non-life-threatening injuries.
An autopsy on Sydney Blanton will be scheduled soon, according to the Johnson County medical examiner's department.
Martin was flying the mother and daughter to their home in Georgia through Angel Flights Central, a nonprofit group that matches volunteer pilots with people who need transportation. The flights are free, and the pilots pay for expenses such as fuel.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
