100 years ago
Aug. 27, 1908: The Saybrook Fair drew 2500 people. It was Republican day, and Lieutenant Governor Sherman made a speech. It was also announced that another Sherman, Vice Presidential nominee James Sherman of New York, would speak in Bloomington September 30.
75 years ago
Aug. 27, 1933: Advertisement: the Hotel Tilden-Hall will open Friday, September 1. The public is cordially invited for inspection 6-9:30 p.m. A dinner dance with Fielder Meyer and his orchestra is set for Saturday night. (The hotel was at Washington and Madison.)
50 years ago
Aug. 27, 1958: Mayor Robert McGraw and others called for creation of a McLean County Forest Preserve, to be established near Lake Bloomington. He brought up the idea at the annual meeting of the Lake Bloomington Association.
25 years ago
Aug. 27, 1983: When old timers talk about the worst summer for heat, they talk of 1936. Now, the summer of '83 has become the second hottest, registering 45 days over 90 degrees. 1936 had 68, with people sleeping on their lawns to try and keep cool.
