100 years ago
Feb. 8, 1908: Local dealers are stocking up on bicycles in anticipation of a big year. The "wheel," as it is called, is as much a staple of commerce as the buggy. One dealer said "you would be surprised to hear the howl" a man puts up when his wheel is in the shop for just a day.
75 years ago
Feb. 8, 1933: It was twelve below zero at 8am on the heels of a two day snowfall. Rural mail carriers couldn't finish their routes. But the Alton Railroad did not need its big snowplow. Regular trains were able to keep the lines open.
50 years ago
Feb. 8, 1958: Charles Warrick, principal of Minonk-Dana-Rutland High School (now Fieldcrest) will be the new Assistant Dean of Men for fraternities at the University of Illinois. He was principal at MDR from 1952-1957. He starts the new job June 1.
25 years ago
Feb. 8, 1983: Police have charged Ronald Hughes, 20, with murder in the shooting death of Anita Renee Turner, 16, of rural Bloomington. Her death makes five known homicides in McLean County in 1983, same as in the 12 month period that ended November 30, 1982.
