100 years ago
Aug. 15, 1908: Springfield is under martial law in the wake of racial rioting. Company D from Bloomington has gone to join troops from all over Illinois to restore order. At least three people are known dead, including one man lynched by a mob.
75 years ago
Aug. 15, 1933: Work is underway on a scenic trail, directing motorists to various points of interest in Bloomington-Normal. It's a Boy Scout project, assisted by numerous businesses, the city, and the Association of Commerce. Sign painting was a big part of the work done today.
50 years ago
Aug. 15, 1958: It's part of the job for Lowess Bridges at Capodice Produce Company to discover and handle snakes, wasps and tarantulas. Just yesterday he found a tarantula in a bunch of bananas from Central or South America. He coaxed it into a glass jar.
25 years ago
Aug. 15, 1983: The Brighams held their 100th family reunion here. They are descended from George and Lydia Brigham, who came to McLean County in 1855. He was from Boston. They met in Cincinnati, came west, and first settled in Pike County, Illinois.
