BLOOMINGTON - An east-side restaurant will likely remain closed for months because of a fire that started during a burglary early Monday, the owner said Tuesday.

Greg Wilson, owner of Wings Etc., said there was no major structural damage to the building at 511 Chancellor Drive, but it will probably be two or three months before the business reopens.

All of the contents will have to be cleared because of the spread of the flames, he said.

"It's pretty extensive," Wilson said. "Basically, the whole inside is gutted."

A police officer saw smoke coming from the eaves of the restaurant when responding to a burglar alarm about 1:15 a.m. Monday, police previously said. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, and authorities later discovered the restaurant's safe and an ATM had been cut open, authorities said.

Wilson said he did not know Tuesday how much was lost in the burglary and fire.

Police have declined so far to say how the safe and ATM were entered. Fire department officials are investigating the cause of the fire.

No new information was available from the police and fire departments Tuesday.

Another restaurant, another safe

Someone also broke into a second restaurant in southeast Bloomington and a safe inside late Sunday or early Monday, police said. Bloomington Police spokesman David White said he did not have any indication the two crimes were related.

Cash was stolen from a safe between 9:15 p.m. Sunday and 6:30 a.m. Monday at Longhorn Smokehouse, 5 Currency Drive.
