BLOOMINGTON - Many residents along Riley Drive were grieving Wednesday, even though they didn't personally know the victims of the Tuesday night shooting on their street that left two brothers dead and two other men hospitalized.

"I don't exactly know who it is who died - I just feel sad, very, very sad," said neighbor Muriel Richardson, a senior citizen who lives with her adult son in the same block where the shooting occurred.

"When two young men die, that's tragic, no matter what the reason," she said. "Today I'm thinking of their mother, their family, their friends."

Hoping to help the shocked and grieving neighborhood, the Rev. Tim George of nearby Fairway Knolls Church of the Nazarene has planned a prayer vigil for 6 p.m. today. People will walk from the church at 610 IAA Drive to Riley, pray at the apartment building where the shootings occurred and pray over homes along the street.

"I would say, wherever there's worry, there's also an equal amount of hope and determination, if not greater," George said.

George said a neighborhood watch meeting at the church had just concluded and about a dozen of the 30 or 40 attendees were still there when they were told about the shooting, which happened about 8:30 p.m. at 333 Riley.

"It was like the air was sucked out of the room," George said.

Richardson said she's lived in the 300 block of Riley about a year, and she still feels safe despite the shooting.

"That was a terrible thing last night. But this really is a nice neighborhood," said her son, David Richardson.

"That kind of thing could have happened if I lived anywhere," added his mother.

Police arrested Michael Brown, 30, of Bloomington, Wednesday. He is expected to be charged today in the shooting that killed Calvin Walls, 42, of Bloomington, and his brother David Walls, 40 of Jackson, Miss., and injured a third Walls brother, Levar, and a fourth man, Montell Jones.

A few buildings west of the crime scene, apartment dweller Rachel Imig had a response similar to the Richardsons'.

"Things like that are sad. But, really, they can happen anywhere," she said.

Imig said she and her family moved to the neighborhood about a month ago. Tuesday night's violence won't chase them out, she said.

"This is a good place to live. I've always heard this is a good neighborhood, and I still think it is - my mom said it's nice here, and I have friends that have lived here and had no problems," she said, noting when it warms up she still intends to push her baby stroller up and down the block.
