PONTIAC - Resident concerns over the safety of Pontiac's Fell Park area were brought to the City Council after the July 12 shooting at a nearby grocery store.
No one was injured in the incident in which at least four shots were fired in the parking lot of County Market in the 400 block of West Madison Street. The park is at the 600 block of West Madison Street.
City Administrator Bob Karls said police have increased patrols in the area.
The incident seemed to be a breaking point for neighbors and residents who are concerned about the park area, he said.
The council discussed the matter at its meeting Monday but no action was taken.
Meanwhile, Ronald Porter Jr., 20, of Chicago who faced several felony charges related to the shooting, entered a guilty plea Monday in Livingston County Circuit Court.
First Assistant State's Attorney Carey Luckman said Porter entered into a blind plea, which means there was no discussion or arrangements made for reduced charges or a request for a lighter sentence.
Porter pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, one for each shot fired. The charge is a Class 1 felony and carries a penalty ranging from probation to four to 15 years in prison, Luckman said.
Porter also pleaded guilty to: unlawful possession of a stolen firearm, a Class 2 felony; obstructing justice, a Class 4 felony; and misdemeanor charges of possessing a firearm without a firearm owner's identification card.
Police said the incident grew out of a July 10 fight involving Porter and a 17-year-old Pontiac boy.
They were supposed to fight again July 12 at the park but did not. Instead, Porter went to the grocery store with a 13-year-old from Cornell, and there they saw several people at the other end of the parking lot.
Previously Luckman said in court that Porter asked the Cornell boy to give him a handgun, and then he fired four to five shots toward the group in the parking lot.
Porter was arrested at a house along West Washington Street without incident and police found a .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol.
Porter is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 8.
The Cornell boy faces similar charges of four counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, one count of unlawful possession of a stolen firearm and one count of possession of a firearm without a firearm owner's identification card.
Under provisions of the Illinois Juvenile Court Act, the names of people under 17 are not a matter of public record in connection with certain offenses.
